Convenience Risk Reduction: Leveraging Laziness to Create Real CRR
Thursday, May 15, 2025
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM MST
Location: Cira A
In the realm of Community Risk Reduction (CRR), convenience is often overlooked. CRR programs often find solutions to critical issues, but community members may not take advantage of them. This presentation delves into the questions: Are we making Community Risk Reduction harder than it needs to be? How can I turn a performative program into real CRR? By transforming innovative ideas into data-driven, effective, and convenient CRR strategies, we can enhance our overall community safety outcomes.
We will explore the importance of accessibility in CRR and present Spring Fire's “Firework Bucket Brigade” program as a case-study example of how a simple “Yes, Chief. That's a great idea...” conversation can evolve from an initial performative program into a practical, data-informed, real risk reduction initiative.
The presentation will draw parallels between CRR and everyday conveniences such as pre-calculated gratuities and curbside grocery pickup, illustrating how simplifying access can lead to better outcomes. Attendees will learn about the Spring Fire Department’s convenience-centered approaches, including door-to-door CO alarm delivery and generator checkups following Hurricane Beryl and comprehensive & accessible home safety visits.
Join us to discover how leading with convenience can transform CRR efforts, making them more effective and easier for your community. This session will provide valuable insights and practical examples for anyone looking to improve their community’s safety through innovative and convenience-focused risk reduction strategies.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to develop a plan for integrating convenience-focused elements into existing CRR programs to increase community participation.
Upon completion, participants will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of current "performative" CRR programs by analyzing data collection methods, accessibility, and convenience to turn performance into real data driven actions.
