Doing it Right – Cancer Awareness and Prevention for Fire Investigators and Inspectors
Thursday, May 15, 2025
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM MST
Location: Cira C
This training session is tailored specifically for fire prevention staff, including fire investigators and inspectors, to address the critical issue of cancer in the fire service. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the scope of cancer risks, supported by the most current research linking occupational exposures to cancer. The session will delve into the specific hazards faced by fire prevention personnel, such as exposure to toxic substances during investigations and inspections.
Through interactive discussions, attendees will explore the relationship between cardiac and cancer risks, learning how a healthy lifestyle can mitigate these dangers. The session will provide a scientific approach to identifying and minimizing occupational exposures, emphasizing the importance of following best practices before, during, and after fire-related activities.
Participants will also learn about modifiable risk factors and how to develop robust prevention strategies. The session will cover early detection tools and techniques, ensuring that fire prevention staff are equipped to identify cancer at its earliest stages, leading to better outcomes.
Additionally, the session will highlight the support services offered by the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), including peer-to-peer support for those diagnosed with cancer. By the end of the training, participants will be prepared to implement effective cancer prevention measures within their departments and support their colleagues in maintaining long, healthy careers and retirements.
Learning Objectives:
Understand Occupational Exposures and Cancer Risks: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the specific occupational exposures faced by fire investigators and inspectors, and how these exposures contribute to increased cancer risks. They will learn to identify these hazards and understand the scientific basis for cancer prevention strategies.
Implement Effective Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Strategies: Participants will learn to develop and implement robust cancer prevention methods, including following recommended guidelines to minimize exposure before, during, and after fire-related activities. They will also gain knowledge on early cancer detection tools and techniques, enabling them to support early diagnosis and improve health outcomes for themselves and their colleagues.
