A Call to Fire Service Leaders to Adopt a Proactive, Community Risk Reduction Mindset
Wednesday, May 14, 2025
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM MST
Location: Aurora ABC
Based on capstone research into fire chiefs' leadership of Community Risk Reduction (CRR), Kelly Hanink will challenge fire service leaders to embrace and champion a proactive, upstream mindset for themselves, their departments, and their communities. The stage will be set with an interactive discussion about the current state of fire and EMS service workload and resource allocations. From this stage, the presentation will interactively look at foundational elements of CRR and of upstream thinking in the fire service. Together, we will explore barriers to the proactive mindset of CRR, possible barrier mitigation, and fire service leaders' perceived and actual roles in CRR.
Learning Objectives:
Articulate threats to the sustainability of the current fire and EMS service delivery model and define a foundation for how Community Risk Reduction efforts and the leadership of these efforts fits into the mitigation of those threats.
Outline potential barriers to successful community risk reduction leadership in their departments and describe possible solutions to remove or mitigate the barriers to improve the sustainability of fire departments.
