Own Your Zone; First Five Feet program is designed to educate communities and residents on the relationship between Home Hardening/Defensible Space efforts and Wildland Urban Interface disasters. The objective of this program is to change the culture of "feeling helpless" in these WUI disasters. This is an educational empowerment session to explain the steps that homeowners can take to change the way they see wildfire and urban interaction. This program was created to empower residents in communities where homes are in close proximity to each other and think that "Defensible Space" does not apply to them, because they reside in urban boundaries. It focuses on explaining the immediate zone (first five feet) and why this is the most critical zone to prevent devastating community loss. This campaign gives positive encouragement back to the residents and homeowners. This program creates a cohesive atmosphere where neighbors can work together, giving them a sense of unity, and helps encourage fire safe neighborhoods far into the future.
